To prepare the caliper for inspection, please ensure the brake chamber is removed, (please refer to the Brake Cylinder Installation Service Bulletin) to gain access to the caliper brake lever. Remove the brake pads from the caliper housing to ensure the caliper is free to move. This will allow access to the brake lever in Figure 1.
Figure 1 - Access to the caliper brake lever
To check the operation of the brake lever, use a suitable tool to depress the brake lever fully - Figure 2. Whilst moving the brake lever, take note of the action. Any signs of malfunction must be examined further.
Figure 2 - Depress the Brake Lever Fully
Once the brake lever has been depressed, remove the tool so that the lever may return under its own pressure to its original resting position. During this movement, the lever should spring back rapidly without any disruption to the movement. During this operation if you experience any rough, high spots, difficulty in movement, any potential malfunction or the lever does not return to its original position; The Caliper could have failed internally and may need repair or replacement.
